Paddle Fish Care Guide

Paddle Fish are fascinating, prehistoric-looking fish that can make excellent companions for koi when kept in the right pond environment. They are relatively easy to care for, but they have some important requirements because they can grow large and have unique feeding habits.

💧 Pond Requirements

Paddle Fish need a large, well-maintained pond with plenty of open swimming space. They are not suited for small ornamental ponds or aquariums as they grow quickly and can eventually reach several feet in length.

• Deep, spacious ponds are ideal.
• Maintain good water quality with adequate filtration and circulation.
• Provide high oxygen levels, particularly during hot summer weather.
• Avoid overcrowding.
• A pond with a relatively open water column is ideal for their natural swimming and feeding behavior.

Water Conditions

Paddle Fish are hardy fish, but stable, clean water is important for long-term health. Regularly monitor water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, ammonia and nitrite.

During periods of hot weather, pay particular attention to oxygen levels. Warm water holds less dissolved oxygen while fish metabolism and oxygen demand increase.

What Do Paddle Fish Eat?

Paddle Fish are filter feeders. Like koi, they can adapt to eating pellets or food from the surface. These paddle already are acustom to eating from the surface. They also naturally swim through the water with their mouths open, filtering tiny organisms and plankton from the water.

In captivity, they can be supplemented with appropriately sized planktonic or suspended foods designed for filter-feeding fish.
